used vs. marketplace

Used - Like a traditional used bookstore. All the books are sold out of the same storefront, so you pay just one shipping fee for your entire purchase. The disadvantage -- Used books are usually more expensive than Marketplace books.

Marketplace - This is a kind of free-for-all where individual sellers (students, independent book sellers, etc.) can list their new and used books for sale. Shop and compare. You'll usually find the lowest prices here. If you're just looking to buy one book, this is usually your best bet, but if you're buying several different books, keep in mind that you'll have to pay a separate shipping fee for each book ordered from a separate marketplace seller.

used books

Powells
Used. Included in Forbes Magazine's Best of the Web list, this Portland, Oregon used book superstore is a favorite with book lovers. It's a good place to go if you're looking to purchase several books at once. You'll pay just one shipping fee, or no shipping fee on $50 orders ( vs. separate shipping fees for each book ordered through an individual marketplace seller).
Free shipping to US, Mexico & Canada on orders of $50 or more.

Half.com
Marketplace. I shop here often. You'll often find some of the best deals here, but some sellers fail to list relevant book details -- edition, details about book's condition, etc.

Amazon.com
Marketplace. You'll often find some of the best deals here, but some sellers fail to list relevant book details -- edition, details about book's condition, etc.
